Smoking pear leaves has a long history in Europe, being one of the primary smoking materials before tobacco was introduced in the mid 1500s. Pear leaves can be smoked in hooka pipes, traditional pipes or as wrapped cigarettes. While eating pears might help protect lung health, smoking anything, including pear leaves can damage lungs and increase the risk of lung disease. However, if you decide to smoke pear leaves, use dried leaves to reduce the amount of moisture creating extra smoke.

Step 1

Harvest the leaves in the morning after the dew evaporates. Discard any leaves that have mold spots. Separate the leaves from the branches leaving as little stem as possible. Rinse leaves off under cool water and pat dry with a paper towel.

Step 2

Preheat the dehydrator to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. More humid climates might require higher temperatures such as 125 degrees.

Step 3

Place the leaves in the dehydrator for one to four hours. The leaves will be properly dried when they are brittle to touch.

Step 4

Remove the leaves from the dehydrator. Crumble them for easy packing.

Step 5

Choose your method of smoking: hookah pipe, tobacco pipe or paper wraps. Hookah pipes place the leaves in the top bowl, often with juice, molasses or sodas to sweeten the flavor. Tobacco pipes pack the leaves in that are lit from above. For papers, lay enough dried leaves to make a cigarette in the desired thickness, roll the wrapper around it and moisten the edge by licking it to seal the paper around the leaves.

Step 6

Light the hookah pipe, tobacco pipe or cigarette. Bring the mouthpiece of edge of the cigarette up to your mouth and inhale.
