Forget refined, heavily processed meals and aimlessly stuffing your face in front of the TV if you're going to follow the Harmony Earth Diet. Christopher Westra created the Harmony Earth Diet, which he outlines in a book entitled "The Harmony Earth 30 Day Energy Diet." He bases the diet on 10 principles meant to shape your eating habits and your mindfulness of food.
Food Choices
Five of the 10 principles touch on your food choices while following the diet. These are variety, quality, local, wholeness and vitality. Rather than falling into an eating rut, the diet encourages you to sample new foods, go with seasonal variations and to choose only whole foods of the highest quality. Eating local foods is also encouraged, which results in food that is fresher and "tells your body where on earth you live," according to principle No. 6 outlined on Westra's website. The vitality principle encourages you to choose food that is full of life and preferably still growing naturally in the wild, rather than foods weakened by hybridization.
Eating Habits
Two of the principles touch on your eating habits. Westra advises eating when you are hungry and reducing that hunger with foods your body craves. Forget rigid mealtimes, traditional eating patterns -- or even forcing yourself to eat certain foods just to fulfill the requirements of a balanced meal. Instead eat what you want, when you want and Westra says your diet will eventually vary over time.
Mindfulness
Three of the principles focus on the mindfulness of eating, being aware of what you're putting in your body and fully savoring and enjoying every bite. Eating slowly helps nourish your body and your soul in unison, principle No. 1 notes. Paying attention also means eating only when you're hungry, rather than eating just because something tastes good, and giving your body time to cleanse between meals. Blessing your food, eating foods prepared with love and being kind in social eating situations round out the mindfulness the diet says should come with the program.
Considerations
While Westra makes the 10 principles readily available and includes teasers from the book on his website, the only way to obtain further details on the diet is by purchasing the book. His website offers an eBook version of "The Harmony Earth Diet" for $22.70 as of press time, or you can buy a paperback version through online retailers. A few of the principles are in sync with weight-loss tips supported bu MayoClinic.com, such as eating whole foods, eating food that's easy to obtain, and eating a variety of foods you enjoy. The Harmony Earth Diet, however, leaves out the important weight loss component of regular physical activity.
