Volleyball is a game in which six players from each team play on a court 60 feet long and 30 feet wide, with a net dividing the court into two equal sections. Three players play front court, while three players defend the back court. While hitting, blocking and spiking are fundamental elements of this competitive sport, just as important are a player's footwork patterns. Maintaining proper footwork helps you successfully cover your area while helping other players set up for hits.

Shuffling

Step 1

Practice shuffling left, right, forward and backward to learn the proper technique of covering your area. Begin by taking small steps in one direction, such as to the left, right, front or back.

Step 2

Step out with your left foot to your left side, and then bring your right foot toward your left foot. Practice this movement until you can shuffle quickly to the left. Do not cross one foot in front of the other.

Step 3

Move the same way in the opposite direction, stepping out to the right on your right foot and bringing your left foot toward your right foot. Repeat this until you can shuffle quickly to the left, right, forward or backward using six to 10 tiny steps.

Four-Step to Block

Step 1

Practice shuffling for four steps in the instructed direction, and then jump into the air with outstretched arms to block the ball. Have your coach try to toss the volleyball over the net at different areas of front court.

Step 2

Step out to the side in the direction of your coach and take three additional small steps to be in front of her. Jump up as she begins to try to hit the ball.

Step 3

Throw your arms in the air, with both arms straightened, and block the ball before it comes over to your side of the net.

Three-Step to Attack

Step 1

Practice the three-step to attack technique to develop skills to shuffle toward the opposing team's hitter and block the shot. Have a teammate set up the ball at various areas of front court.

Step 2

Step out to the side in the direction of your teammate and take two additional quick steps until you are almost directly beside her.

Step 3

Jump high in the air as your teammate tosses the ball up. Stretch your arms out and strike the ball with force from your dominant arm.

Tips and Warnings

  • One of the best methods of learning techniques and footwork patterns in any sport is to practice the game. Attend volleyball practice and continue practicing at home, if possible, to master the steps, blocks, hits and attacks necessary for playing successfully.
