Having the right footwear is essential for sports performance, but for baseball and softball players, the cleats are the foundation for speed and agility. Cleats come in a variety of styles, including metal cleats that are made specifically for males and females. While male metal cleats and female metal cleats are designed for the same overall function, there are a few differences.
Function
Since both male and female baseball and softball players use the same playing surfaces, the basic function of the metal cleats is the same. The metal cleats are designed in a specific pattern to improve traction on dirt, grass and artificial surfaces while preventing slipping on wet or under-maintained surfaces. As a result, males and females use the traction while running the bases or playing defense.
Organizations
According to the Major League Baseball rule book, rule 1.11(g) states that no player shall have metal cleats that are spikes, similar to golf or track shoes. This rule is typically carried over into male and female baseball and softball organizations that allow metal cleats. Male baseball players have always been allowed to wear metal cleats at the high school, college and pro levels. But it wasn't until 2008 that high school softball players could wear metal cleats.
Fit
Male and female metal spikes are designed with a different fit to accommodate the different foot types. As a general rule, female metal spikes are slightly narrower than male metal spikes. Male cleats are typically the same width at the forefoot and heel, while female cleats have a narrower heel than the forefoot. Females can wear male metal cleats if they need a wider shoe.
Types
Most metal cleats for males and females feature a permanent sole, but some types of cleats feature interchangeable cleats. The interchangeable cleats allow you to change from metal to molded cleats. Some leagues, tournaments or organizations may require a specific cleat or restrict the cleat length. Interchangeable cleats make it possible to abide by these varying rules.
