Attack men and middies might re-size a lacrosse head to make stronger shots on goal or harder passes. Typically, you do this by modifying the tension on certain strings and readjusting the center of the pocket accordingly. Lacrosse nets are trimmed to size during installation and if you want a deeper pocket, it's necessary to re-string the head with a larger net. But you might add flexibility in the pocket by removing the lowest shooting string. For more power, follow a procedure used by trainers and technicians when you re-size a men's lacrosse head.

Adjusting Pocket

Step 1

Undo the knots at the lowest and second shooting strings at one side of the head with needle-nose pliers. Let the tag ends of the strings hang at the outside of the head for now.

Step 2

Hold the stick level above a table with the bottom of the pocket touching the tabletop. Place a lacrosse ball in the center of the pocket.

Step 3

Pull the ends of the shooting strings to tighten the net so the top of the ball is even with the stringing rails on each side of the head. Lower the pocket against the tabletop as you go to prevent the strings from retracting back into the head. Remove the ball from the pocket.

Step 4

Tie a loose overhand knot at the end of the lowest shooting string. Push the knot against the side of the head with one hand and pull the tag end of the knot tight. Repeat this step to secure the second shooting string in place.

Centering Pocket

Step 1

Undo the knots at the ends of the right end left sidewall strings with needle-nose pliers. Pull one of the strings out of the diamond mesh and the lacing holes at the side rail of the head.

Step 2

Re-lace the sidewall string through the second course of diamonds from the side of the head. Loop the string under and through the side rail at the corresponding holes as you go, and pull the string fully through each time.

Step 3

Secure the end of the sidewall string at the outside of the head with a double overhand knot. Do not cut the tag end of the knot.

Step 4

Repeat the steps and re-lace the opposite sidewall string through the second course of diamonds at the opposite side of the head. Tie a double overhand knot at the outside of the head.

Step 5

Hold the stick level and drop the lacrosse ball in the head. If necessary, loosen the knots at a sidewall string with the pliers and tighten the string so the ball rests in the center of the pocket. Re-tie the double overhand knot. Clip the excess sidewall strings with scissors, if desired.
