How to Clean a Drinking Water Safe Hose

Mowing the lawn or pulling weeds out can be tiring and make you thirsty, especially if it's a hot day. Drinking water from a drinking water safe garden hose can satisfy your thirst and wash your face with cold water to get relief from the heat. However, these hoses can accumulate dust, bacteria and small insects when they are not used often. Cleaning your drinking water hose once a week is recommended to prevent infections and an upset stomach.

Step 1

Fill up a large basin with 10 gallons of clean water.

Step 2

Add 20 tbsp. of unscented bleach to the basin. Adding bleach will help eliminate disease-causing germs in the hose. Avoid using scented bleach since the plastic lining of the water hose can absorb the scent. Stir the solution well for about five minutes.

Step 3

Wear a new clean pair of household rubber gloves. Coil the water hose and tie it tightly with a piece of string to prevent it from uncoiling in the basin.

Step 4

Slowly submerge the water hose in the basin. You will notice bubbles coming out of both ends of the hose. The hose will be completely filled with solution once the bubbles stop coming out. Cover the basin with a clean plastic table cover or other covering. Let the hose bathe in the solution for about eight hours.

Step 5

Remove the water hose from the solution and rinse it under running water to remove the solution from its surface. Connect the hose to a faucet and turn the water on and leave it running for 30 minutes to flush out the solution. Cut the string to uncoil the hose.
