A pretzel is a type of pastry that originates from Medieval Europe, according to The Kitchen Project. A traditional pretzel is soft and has the distinctive shape of a three-looped knot. A hard pretzel may also have a variety of other shapes and is frequently smaller than a soft pretzel.

Preparation

Pretzel dough contains the typical ingredients of water, wheat flour, sugar and yeast. The baked pretzel is also glazed with lye and sprinkled with coarse salt, making it very high in sodium. A typical medium pretzel may have over 1,600 milligrams (mg) of sodium, which is two-thirds of the daily requirement for sodium. An unsalted, unbuttered pretzel of the same size has about 200 mg of sodium.

Serving Size

The nutritional information will be for a medium-sized soft pretzel weighing about 4 ounces. This is a pretzel about the size of an adult hand and about 0.4 inches thick. Pretzels are frequently dipped or coated with a variety of sauces but this nutritional information will be for a plain pretzel.

Calories

A pretzel contains a total of 386 calories. Carbohydrates contribute 316 calories, proteins provide 38 calories and the remaining 32 calories come from fat. A pretzel provides 19 percent of the daily value (DV) for total calories. The DV is based on daily diet of 2,000 calories.

Carbohydrates

A pretzel contains about 80 grams of carbohydrates, which consists of 78 grams of pure carbohydrates and 2 gram of digestible fiber. Each gram of a pure carbohydrate contains 4 calories so a pretzel has 78 x 4 = 312 calories from pure carbohydrates. Each gram of digestible fiber has an average of 2 calories so a pretzel contains 2 x 2 = 4 calories from digestible fiber.

Fat

A pretzel contains about 3.6 grams of fat. Each gram of fat has 9 calories, so a pretzel contains 3.6 x 9 = 32 calories from fat. Unsaturated fats account for 2.8 grams and saturated fats account for the remaining 0.8 grams.

Protein

A pretzel contains about 9.4 grams of protein. Each gram of protein contains 4 calories, so a pretzel contains 9.4 x 4 = 38 calories.
