Hydroxycut is an over-the-counter supplement that uses a variety of vitamins and herbs to aid in weight loss. Hydroxycut's website claims that taking the pills helps you lose more weight than dieting alone, reduces your body mass index and increases energy. While two separate studies are cited on its website, there is no further evidence to substantiate the claims of increased weight loss. Because Hydroxycut is not FDA-approved, you should be aware of the contents of Hydroxycut pills and take them with caution.

The Hydroxycut Pro Clinical Formula contains vitamin C and calcium. Specifically, Hydroxycut contains 7 mg of vitamin C, or 12 percent of the recommended daily value. In addition, it contains 170 mg of calcium, or 17 percent of the recommended daily value. Other formulations may contain different vitamins of varying amounts. For example, the Hydroxycut Shape Formula for women contains 333 mcg of folic acid; in addition to 2 mg of iron.

Although these are herbal extracts, they are not approved by the FDA. In fact, the FDA issued a warning in 2009 concerning reports of Hydroxycut causing severe liver damage. Therefore, you should not assume that herbal extracts are always safe, and check with your doctor before taking Hydroxycut.
