Sinus problems are a common health complaint, and one of the most common causes of sinus problems are sinus infections, or sinusitis. According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, about 12 percent of people in the United States over 45 years of age have chronic sinusitis symptoms. Certain dietary changes may be beneficial in treating your sinus infection, although it is always wise to discuss this natural healing approach with your doctor first.

Sinus Infection

Sinus infections involve inflammation of your sinuses and may be caused by several pathogens, including viruses, bacteria and fungi. The National Center for Biotechnology Information states that certain factors may increase your risk for developing sinus infections, such as hay fever, tooth infections, low immune function, long-term smoking and several chronic health problems, including cystic fibrosis and HIV. Nasal congestion, sinus pressure and bad breath may be among the most common symptoms associated with sinus infections.

A Healthy Diet

A healthy diet in treating your sinus problem may involve certain dietary exclusions and inclusions. According to naturopathic physicians Michael Murray and Joseph Pizzorno, co-authors of "Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine," important dietary exclusions in treating this condition include milk, wheat, eggs, citrus, corn and peanut butter. Beneficial dietary additions in treating your sinus problems may include cayenne peppers, garlic, ginger, horseradish and onions. A diet comprising 75 percent raw foods may be particularly helpful in treating this health problem.

A Beneficial Food

Cayenne peppers may be one of the most beneficial foods in treating your sinus problems. Nutritionist and biologist George Mateljan, author of "The World's Healthiest Foods," states that cayenne peppers have historically been used in breaking up mucus congestion in your nose and lungs and improving your immune system's response against infections. This food may also be helpful in promoting optimal digestive and heart health and weight control. Cayenne peppers contain significant amounts of vitamins A, B-6 and C and manganese.

Disclaimer

Sinus infections may, in rare cases, lead to serious health complications, such as meningitis, osteomyelitis and abscess formation. If you experience the signs and symptoms of a sinus infection, report to your doctor at your earliest possible convenience for a full examination. Your doctor can provide you with an accurate diagnosis and counsel you on the advantages, disadvantages and limitations of dietary changes in treating this health problem. A larger body of clinical research evidence may be needed to determine the true efficacy of foods traditionally used in treating sinus problems.
