Croup is a common problem seen with children, especially babies and toddlers. Croup is a viral infection that causes inflammation in the respiratory system. Common viruses responsible for this infection include parainfluenza or respiratory syncytial virus, which your child comes into contact with through breathing or touching infected surfaces. Croup can also develop due to irritants like allergens or acid reflux.

Temperature

As your child's immune system kicks in to try to fight off a virus affecting the respiratory system, his body temperature will rise, resulting in a fever. Because fevers are associated with a wide range of infections, it's important to talk to your pediatrician to get a full examination and accurate diagnosis.

Breathing and Swallowing

Along with a change in temperature, croup can also cause problems with breathing and swallowing. Croup may cause your child to have difficulty breathing, resulting in a stridor, otherwise known as a high-pitched scraping sound caused by inflammation obstructing the larynx or windpipe. Your child may also have problems swallowing due to inflammation or start to drool.

Cough Sounds

One of the most noticeable signs that your child has croup is the type of sound that accompanies her cough. A croup-related cough has a harsh, almost barking sound, which MayoClinic.com likens to the sound of a barking seal. The barking noise comes from the inflammation around your child's windpipe and vocal cords.

Skin

A serious sign of croup can be seen on your child's skin. If the skin around the nose, fingernails or mouth takes on a blue or gray tint, this can also be a sign that you should have your child examined for croup.

Behavior

Your child's behavior may also change with croup. If your child's symptoms are accompanied by increased fussiness and crying, these can also be signs of croup.
