According to KidsHealth.org, it's common for children to fear going to the doctor. The fear of pain and separation from parents can affect children. Children often also worry about the doctor himself; the speed of an exam or the bedside manners of a doctor can alarm a child. Take action to help ease your child's apprehension about an upcoming doctor's visit.
Step 1
Explain the reason your child will be going to the doctor. If your child is going for just a check-up, explain the importance of making sure he's healthy and growing properly. If your child is going to the doctor for an injury or illness, explain that the doctor is going to help fix the problem.
Step 2
Teach your child about the type of doctor she'll be seeing; explain in simple terms what this doctor can do to help her.
Step 3
Use a toy doctor's kit to allow your child to act out going to the doctor. Use the toy blood pressure cuff and stethoscope to explain to him what the doctor may do and why the doctor does it.
Step 4
Read books with your child about going to the doctor. Books about going to the doctor can explain what goes on during a visit and alleviate fears.
Step 5
Give your child an opportunity to ask you questions. Answer questions about doctors as honestly as possible. If something may hurt a little or be embarrassing, let her know. Assure her that you will be with her at all times.
