You can avoid invasive colon cleansing procedures by using natural homemade remedies to help your colon function properly. According to The Mayo Clinic, colon cleanses are appropriate if a doctor orders them for medical procedures, but are not recommended for so-called detoxification because your bowels eliminate waste material and bacteria naturally. If you are concerned about your bowel function or if you have constipation, you can take steps to be healthier. As with trying any home remedy, you should consult your physician first.
Eat More Roughage
Consuming unprocessed fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans will naturally cleanse the colon and promote healthy colon function. To make your own "colon cleanse" cereal, combine 6 cups of oatmeal, 1 cup of shredded coconut, 3 cups of wheat germ, 1/2 cup of chopped pecans, 1 1/2 cups of brown sugar, 1/2 tsp. salt and 1/2 cup of vegetable oil. Mix the ingredients and toast the mixture in the oven at 325 degrees until the oatmeal is slightly golden brown.
Tea and Water
Teas made with senna leaf, flaxseed or psyllium seed will help to naturally cleanse the colon. Drinking at least six glasses of water each day will further encourage natural colon health. Liquids, in general, help to move waste through the body naturally. Not consuming enough liquids can lead to dehydration and constipation, so be sure you are drinking ample liquids daily.
Magnesium
Simply taking a daily magnesium supplement or a multivitamin containing at least 400 milligrams of magnesium with a glass of warm water will aid elimination of waste material. Holistic health expert Cynthia Perkins asserts that a magnesium deficiency can contribute to overall poor colon health.
Exercise
Physical activity creates activity within the muscles of the abdomen, allowing food to pass more easily to and through the colon. Researchers at The Mayo Clinic note that daily exercise improves your mood, combats chronic disease, helps you manage your weight, boosts your energy, promotes better sleep and increases your libido. By engaging in daily physical activity, you are not only encouraging a healthy colon, but overall well-being.
Foods To Avoid
Excessive amounts of some foods can compact the digestive tract. Avoiding these foods or consuming them in small increments can help your colon more proficiently cleanse itself. You should avoid or limit your intake of gravies, pastries, breads, white flour and fried foods.
