The layup is the easiest shot in basketball. When a player gets an opportunity to shoot a layup, he is taking the ball on a fast break or after receiving a pass from a teammate right to the basket and laying it in off the backboard and through the rim. A basketball player must be confident that he will always make this shot when it goes unchallenged and must find a way to put it in when a defender is close.

Step 1

Square yourself to the basket and drive toward the backboard. Your shoulders must be going toward the spot on the basket where you are going to lay the ball if you are coming from the center of the floor or at an angle. If you come from the baseline, you must turn and face the basket before you lay the ball off the backboard and into the hoop.

Step 2

Run hard to the basket as you make a layup. The basket is the most important area for your opponent to defend. If there is an opening, you must get there quickly because your opponent is moving to close down that opening. You must be explosive as you go to the hoop.

Step 3

Shoot the ball with your outside hand. If you are coming in on the right side of the basket, you must shoot it with your right hand. If you are coming in on the left side, shoot it with your left hand. Shooting with your outside hand gives you the best chance of not getting your shot blocked and it also gives you an easier angle to have the ball go off the backboard and through the rim.

Step 4

Jump off your opposite foot as you shoot your layup. If you are coming in off the right side, jump with your left foot. This gives you the best chance of staying on line and shooting the ball with touch.

Step 5

Hit the top line of the square above the rim when you lay the ball off the backboard. This is your guide when shooting a layup while moving at top speed toward the basket.
