How to Avoid Foot Cramping During Bikram Yoga

Bikram yoga is a form of hot yoga. The class generally runs 90 minutes and is done in a 105-degree room. The philosophy behind the practice is that the heat allows you to go deeper into the stretches and increases circulation throughout the body. As beneficial as Bikram yoga is you may still experience muscle cramps, especially in your feet. By taking a few precautions you can prevent foot cramping during your Bikram yoga session.

Step 1

Drink an electrolyte-based sports drink during the session in addition to your water. Due to the heat in the room and the vigorous nature of the practice, you will lose a lot of water and minerals during the 90-minute session, which can cause leg and foot cramps. A sports drink will replace those lost minerals.

Step 2

Take frequent breaks. Muscle fatigue, especially in your legs and feet, can lead to poor form and cramping. If you feel dizzy or tired, go into child's pose to recover.

Step 3

Lift and spread your toes. Some people curl their toes in an effort to "grab" the floor to balance in standing poses. This can cause cramping along your arch. Lifting and spreading your toes releases your "grip" on the floor, encourages blood flow through your foot and relaxes your arch.

Things You'll Need
