Pummeling in wrestling is the process of establishing position on your opponent by using your arms and upper body. The wrestler who can successfully control his opponent through pummeling has a better chance of initiating an offensive attack or blocking an opponent's attack.
Step 1
Stand in front of your opponent about 2 or 3 feet away with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width.
Step 2
Lean into your opponent and engage using an overhook on one side and an underhook on the other. An overhook is when you take hold of your opponent and put pressure on him with your arm above his. An underhook is when you take hold your opponent under his arm preventing him from establishing position.
Step 3
Slide your arm through on your overhook side by bending your elbow and placing your hand into the armpit area of your opponent.
Step 4
Tighten your elbow toward your body as you reach around and grab your opponent in the latissimus dorsi muscle area, which is on the lower part of the back..
Step 5
Create space between your chest and your opponent's chest as you try to get your head to the other side of your opponent's body.
Step 6
Lean into your opponent again as she reverses her overhook to an underhook on the other side.
Tips and Warnings
- Position your head to the same side of your opponent's body as your overhook. Keep your knees slightly bent throughout the pummel.
