One important aspect of shooting in lacrosse is being able to keep the goalie guessing where the shot is coming from. If you can get your opponent to lean one way or the other so his balance is thrown off, you will make it easier to slip a shot past him. While difficult to pull off effectively, the twister shot incorporates a significant amount of stick movement, which you can use to your advantage.

Step 1

Begin your shot as if you were going to throw across your body. You want to sell the fake as well as possible, so go through the same motions you would shooting across your body. Keep your dominant hand high on the stick and bring it from the dominant side to the weak side, just as you would while taking a shot.

Step 2

Drop the head of the stick toward the ground with your dominant hand while bringing your weak hand, holding the butt of the stick, toward your dominant shoulder. This is where the twist in the shot comes in.

Step 3

Release the ball as the head of the stick is facing the the net. Ideally, the goaltender will be expecting a cross-body shot, but the late twist you put on the stick will make the ball travel toward the direction of your dominant hand. It can be difficult to generate a great deal of power on a twister shot, so the closer to the goal that you are shooting, the better luck you will most likely have.

Tips and Warnings

  • Practice the placement of your twister shot more than power, as a well-placed shot from close range will still beat the goaltender.
