Joy Bauer is a registered dietitian with a master of science degree in nutrition. Bauer works as the in-house nutrition expert on the "Today" show, where she commonly profiles individuals who have lost over 100 pounds using her Life Diet system. Bauer calls her diet the Life Diet and based it on her experiences working as a nutritionist. According to Bauer, by following the Life Diet you can expect to lose 5 lbs. in the first week of the diet. This weight loss will then motivate you to keep going until you reach your diet goal. As with any diet, you should consult a medical professional prior to attempting the Life Diet.
The Program
During the first week of the Life Diet, you will remove the unhealthy products you currently consume from your diet. This includes alcohol, salt, sugar, caffeine and processed food. Bauer calls the first week of this diet the Release. During the second week of the diet, you will relearn how to incorporate healthy foods into your diet. The third phase of this diet program, called the Reshape Phase, will teach you how to adopt an eating plan that you can follow until you reach your desired weight. You will continue with the Reshape Phase until you reach your desired weight loss goal. The fourth and final phase of the Life Diet, called the Reveal Phase, acknowledges and celebrates your success and teaches you how to apply what you have learned so that you can maintain your weight loss.
Exercise
According to Bauer, a diet program must include an exercise component if you want to maintain your weight loss for the long run. In phase one of the diet, you will perform cardiovascular exercise between 30 and 60 minutes every day. During the second phase of the diet, you will add interval strength and stretching exercises to your daily cardiovascular routine three to five days per week. During the third and fourth phases of this diet, you will add resistance exercise to your cardiovascular and interval strength and stretching exercises two to three times per week.
Nutrition
Bauer recommends eating three full meals plus one afternoon snack daily. Additionally, Bauer states that you should eat these meals at specific times throughout the day according to a schedule. You should eat breakfast within 90 minutes of waking up in the morning. Thirty minutes prior to lunch and dinner, the Life Diet requires you to drink two 8 oz. glasses of water. Additionally, you should always begin your dinner with a large salad or vegetable soup.
Long-Term Success
Bauer has made this diet easy to follow. Further, the information learned during the diet program provides you with valuable information you can use to maintain your weight loss for the long term. To this end, the Life Diet teaches you the physical and psychological reasons for weight gain and shows you how to address these issues by making lifestyle changes to your diet and exercise habits.
