1. Prepare for a Long Day
The Ironman triathlon series is the ultimate triathlon event. Participants endure a grueling day, which includes a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run. Athletes who finish the event will put in 140.6 miles. Ironman locations continue to sprout in the United States and abroad. Kona, Hawaii is one of the most popular locales for the event. Other Ironman locations include New York, Idaho, Florida, Arizona, California, the United Kingdom, France, Australia and Japan.
2. The Odds of Winning are Long
With the exception of the Kona event, athletes do not have to qualify for Ironman triathlons. Most people who sign up for the first time aim only to finish the race. That is enough of a victory. People doing Ironman for the second time and beyond usually try to beat their old times. Only the serious athletes, who can devote hours to training each week, have a realistic chance to win an Ironman triathlon.
3. Bring the Whole Family
An Ironman triathlon is a multi-day event. Athletes must register the day before. The day after the race, a banquet and awards ceremony is held for the athletes. Many participants bring their families to enjoy the race and the other activities that take place during the event. Kids can make signs and ring bells to cheer on the racers throughout the day.
4. Ironman Sells Out Quickly
Ironman triathlons continue to grow in popularity and races sell out quickly at each location. With only 2000 slots per race, you should register a year in advance. You can register online and races typically sell out in less than an hour, so have your credit card ready. It's a good thing that you must register a year in advance, as it takes some people that long to get into Ironman shape. Once you have registered for the event, book your accommodations right away since they fill up quickly, too.
5. Ironman Triathlons Aren't Cheap
The cost to register for Ironman doesn't include transportation, lodging or meals. Most of the equipment you need for an Ironman, such as a wet suit, road bike and running shoes, can be expensive. Other pricey equipment for Ironman includes a bike helmet (mandatory) and a wheel set (optional). On the other hand, spending such a sizable amount before the race may be a good incentive to train harder.
