The Side Effects of Promensil and Zetia Used to Lower Cholesterol

Promensil is the brand name of several products derived from red clover marketed as an over-the-counter remedy for symptoms associated with menopause. Zetia is a brand name for a medication known generically as ezetimibe that your doctor may prescribe to help reduce your cholesterol levels. No medical evidence exists that these two products used in combination cause interaction problems. However, this may be the result of insufficient clinical tests of the combination. Both of these products, the supplement and the drug, can cause side effects. Ask your physician about your desire to take Promensil and Zetia together.

Nausea and Headaches

The most common side effect you may experience when you take Promensil, nausea, should appear in mild form. It may make your stomach feel upset with an impending sensation of vomiting. Nausea commonly occurs as a non-serious side effect when you use a red clover supplement such as Promensil. Zetia, however, can cause nausea as a serious side effect that requires medical attention immediately. If you take the drug with Promensil, you will not be able to discern between which causes the nausea, so you should seek medical attention. You also may experience headaches when you first use a red clover supplement, but these tend to dissipate as you use it more.

Flu-Like Symptoms

Taking Zetia can cause side effects that resemble the types of symptoms you would experience if you had the flu or a cold. Some of these may occur in mild form, such as rhinitis and nasal congestion. These usually result from your body's adjustment to the medicine. However, if you develop headaches, throat soreness and a fever that accompanies a severe rash on your skin, you need to speak with your practitioner immediately.

Pain

Zetia can cause a variety of pain as side effects. You may experience pain in your muscles as well as in your stomach, both classified as serious side effects. The drug also may induce pancreatitis that may produce severe pain in your back and the top part of your stomach. You also may experience pain in your chest. If any of these types of pain occur, call your doctor immediately or get to an emergency room. If you experience mild pain in your stomach, back, joints or head, you may have temporary, non-serious side effects associated with starting to take Zetia. If any of this pain worries you, call your physician.

Depression

When you start to take the prescribed Zetia for your cholesterol lowering treatment, you may begin to feel depressed. Your mood may become dour and you may feel sad. In most people, these depressed feelings will dissipate once your body acclimates to the drug. If you continue to feel depressed, seek medical aid.
