Stubborn belly fat may be a difficult area to target while on a weight-loss program. Although it is not possible to spot-reduce weight from one body area, a reduction in belly fat can be achieved by following a well-balanced diet plan combined with regular exercise. Recent research reveals that probiotics may also help reduce belly fat. According to ThatsFit.com, Finnish researchers found that women who took probiotics post-pregnancy were less likely to have central obesity after a year than women who didn't take supplements. Consult with a physician prior to taking probiotics to determine individual needs and safety.

Probiotics and Digestion

Probiotics are supplements that help to maintain a healthy balance in the digestive tract between good and bad bacteria. The University of Maryland Medical Center cites that probiotics may help prevent and suppress infections from H. pyloir, a bad bacteria in the gut, as well as decrease the side effects from antibiotic use. Typical recommendation is daily use of a supplement containing lactobacillus acidophilius. Maintaining a healthy digestive system may assist with weight loss through the elimination of toxins and waste materials from the body. Increased bad bacteria in the gut feed off of undigested foods and lead to constipation, bloating and lethargy.

Belly Fat

The Mayo Clinic cites that belly fat may increase the risk of serious diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and certain cancers. Excess weight is essentially the result of consuming more calories than you burn off and may be distributed all over the body including the hips, thighs, arms and buttocks. However, hormonal changes that occur with aging, particularly with women during menopause, may result in redistribution of fat stores to the abdomen. Genetics may also have a role in fat distribution, and body shapes vary among individuals. According to the Mayo Clinic, people are at increased risk of illness if waist circumferences exceed 35 inches for women and 40 inches for men.

Study Results

Despite increasing research on the benefits of probiotics, studies on their association with weight-loss has been limited. However, a 2010 study published in the "European Journal of Clinical Nutrition" does show potentially promising results, according to Dr. Jarrett Marrow of Jarretmarrow.com. The study looked at the effects of probiotics, namely Lactobacillus gasseri, on body weight and abdominal fat in obese individuals. Results revealed that subjects who consumed 200 g of fermented milk with probiotics had a significant decrease in both abdominal and body fat by the end of the 12-week study. Furthermore, there were no adverse health effects observed.

Healthy Lifestyle

Although probiotics may assist with decreasing belly fat, taking supplements alone won't keep excess weight off. For long-term weight-loss success, a healthy diet combined with a regular exercise program will aid in slow and steady weight loss and improved health. Taking probiotics while eating a diet high in processed, fatty foods will not negate the excess dietary calories, lack of nutrients and sugar consumed that contribute to belly fat. A balanced diet plan should consist of low-calorie fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, whole-grains and healthy fats in moderation. Additionally, engaging in aerobic exercise such as jogging or biking three to five times per week with two to three days of full-body strength training will increase muscle mass to burn more calories.
