Your baby's teeth start to develop in the womb. Adequate nutrition during pregnancy is an important part of the development of your baby's teeth. Each tooth has four parts: enamel, dentin, pulp and the root. Enamel is the outer layer of the tooth, dentin is the inner layer of the tooth, the pulp is the inside cavity that contains the nerves of the tooth, and the root secures the tooth into the jaw. You can expect your baby's first teeth to come in between 4 and 12 months of age.

Central Incisors

Central incisors or the front teeth are the first baby teeth to erupt. Your baby's teeth usually erupt in pairs. The bottom two teeth usually erupt between 4 and 6 months of age. Your baby's top two central incisors usually erupt after the bottom teeth, around 8 months of age.

Lateral Incisors

Lateral incisors, or the teeth next to the central incisors, will come in around 8 to 9 months of age. Your baby's top lateral incisors usually come in before the bottom-lateral incisors.

First Molars

Your baby's first set of molars will erupt between the ages of 12 and 13 months. The first molars are the teeth that are located in between the canine or cuspid teeth and the second molars.

Canine Teeth

Your baby's canine teeth or eye teeth will come in around 15 to 16 months of age. These teeth are located next to the lateral incisors. Your baby's canine teeth will help your child eat more-textured foods because these teeth are used for tearing food.

Second Molars

Your baby's second set of molars, or the two-year molars, will erupt around 2 years of age. These molars are located next to the first molars in the back of your baby's mouth.
