Multiple sclerosis, or MS, is a chronic disease affecting the brain, optic nerves and spinal cord. It can cause loss of balance, poor coordination, blurred vision, slurred speech, tremors, numbness, fatigue, memory and concentration issues, paralysis and blindness. According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, it is estimated that approximately 400,000 Americans have MS with an additional 200 people diagnosed every week. For many suffering from MS, vitamin and mineral levels are affected by the disease or medications. Research has found that certain vitamin and mineral supplements are beneficial if you suffer from MS. Consult with your physician before adding any new vitamin and mineral supplements.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is a fat soluble nutrient and a deficiency in vitamin D has been linked to risk factors in developing multiple sclerosis. Vitamin D can be created by your body when your skin is exposed to ultraviolet B rays from the sun. It can also be acquired by supplements, fortified milk and oily fish like salmon. A 2011 study published in "Immunological Investigations" looked at the therapeutic effects of vitamin D supplementation for patients with MS. The research found that vitamin D therapy may help to prevent the initial development of MS as well as work as a useful addition to traditional treatment of the disease.
Antioxidants
Antioxidants are vitamins and minerals that work to protect your cells from free radicals which are molecules that are produced when your body breaks down food or is exposed to environmental substances like tobacco smoke and radiation. A 2011 study published in the "Bosnian Journal of Basic Medical Sciences" says that it is believed that free radicals and oxidative stress play a role in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis. The researchers stress the importance of antioxidant supplementation for patients with MS. Antioxidants include beta-carotene, lutein, lycopene, selenium, vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E.
Calcium
Calcium, along with vitamin D, is essential for bone health. According to a 2009 study published in "Neurology," osteoporosis is very common in patients with MS. The study showed that patients with MS reported low bone mass and are at a greater risk for fractures. The researchers concluded that supplementation with vitamin D and calcium was recommended for patients with multiple sclerosis.
Considerations
If you have been diagnosed with MS, it is important to talk with your physician regarding the need for possible vitamin and mineral supplementation. Many medications used to treat multiple sclerosis can affect the absorption of many vitamins and could require an increase in vitamin intake. With the connection between vitamin D and multiple sclerosis, it is recommended that you have your vitamin D levels tested and treated for vitamin D deficiency if necessary. Your physician will be able to create a supplementation program that will best fit your individual needs.
