Multivitamin supplements contain all of the vitamins and minerals you need to sustain good health. As part of a daily routine, some people use multivitamins to further boost their health. Some people may experience headaches while taking multivitamins, and in most cases this is a common nonsevere side effect of taking them. However, in some cases it may be necessary to see a physician.

Identification

Multivitamins are a combination of vitamins and minerals, and usually contain 100 percent of the recommended dietary allowance of these vitamins and minerals. Multivitamins are generally used to help supplement good health and treat vitamin deficiencies. These vitamins come in many special combinations tailored to seniors, pregnant women, nail growth, eye health and children's health. Multivitamins are sold in capsule, tablet, powder, liquid and chewable form.

Side Effects

Although multivitamins can be purchased over-the-counter and they are not considered a medication, many people taking multivitamins may experience side effects. The most common side effects from taking multivitamins are upset stomach, headache or unpleasant taste in the mouth, as stated by Drugs.com. Headaches that arise from taking multivitamins should not be severe.

Safety

If you experience symptoms such as hives, difficulty breathing, facial swelling or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, get emergency care immediately. These may be signs of a severe allergic reaction and may lead to anaphylactic shock. A severe migraine may be the sign of a vitamin overdose, if you have taken more than one multivitamin within 24 hours.

Considerations

If you've forgotten to take your multivitamin, do not double up your doses. If you cannot remember whether you've taken your vitamin, do not take a vitamin for 24 hours; this will help prevent hypervitaminosis. If you experience headaches each time you take a multivitamin, speak to your physician about changing the brand or type of multivitamin you're taking.
