Stickhead is a nationwide lacrosse organization that conducts youth training camps and schedules youth games. The organization teaches the basics and promotes lacrosse by providing uniforms that sport the Stickhead logo. As a budding player, you might appreciate the opportunity to learn and develop your skills in an atmosphere that's geared to fuel your enthusiasm for the sport. Once you complete the training camp, you can participate in games against other Stickhead teams.
Signing Up
Step 1
Contact a regional Stickhead affiliate through current members or by going online. Request and complete an application to attend a training camp.
Step 2
Submit the application and a fee that covers the organization's costs for two days of training camp, meals and your Stickhead uniform.
Step 3
Bring your lacrosse stick, shoes, your helmet and a mouth guard to camp. If the camp offers overnight facilities, bring a change of clothes, socks and underwear and a bathroom travel kit.
Learning the Game
Step 1
Participate in the opening sessions that teach you the basics of the game. Depending on the particular camp, you might be asked to start by working with an offensive or defensive coach.
Step 2
Learn the fundamentals of playing offense by participating in drills that teach proper catching and scooping technique. Learn to catch the lacrosse ball in the pocket and flex your wrists away from the direction of the pass at the same time. Learn to bend your knees and scoop a ball off the turf while running.
Step 3
Participate in drills that teach you the fundamentals of making passes on the run. Learn to bring the stick back to either side and keep your eyes on the target as you pass. Expect to learn one or more basic plays for advancing the ball toward an opponent's goal.
Step 4
Lean the fundamentals of playing defense in drills that teach you how to backpedal into position and cover an opponent. Learn the proper techniques for blocking an opponent with your upper body and defending passes and shots on goal with your stick.
Step 5
Develop your fundamentals by participating in practice games at the camp. Apply what you've learned when your side is on offense and defense. Learn to anticipate a pass or shot on goal and use your speed to get into position. Ask a coach for additional instruction any time your fundamentals need improvement.
