Making pizza in a rammed earth oven is an experience that any pizza enthusiast will enjoy. This type of oven lends an earthy taste to the cheesy dough that makes up the pizza. With some experimentation, you can get the right combination of heat and air to bake a pizza to perfection.

How to Cook a Pizza in a Rammed Earth Pizza Oven

Step 1

Preheat your pizza oven to medium-high heat, about 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure the floor of your oven is clean and ready for the pizza.

Step 2

Sprinkle a handful of cornmeal on the floor of the oven, as well as the pizza peel. Scoop the pizza up with the peel and place in the oven well away from the fire. Make sure it slides along the floor of the oven by turning gently.

Step 3

Bake for about 90 seconds, then slide the peel under the pizza and turn so the other side of the pizza gets enough even heat.

Step 4

Allow to bake for an additional 90 seconds and your pizza should be done. Pull the pizza out enough for you to inspect it for temperature. If the vegetables are getting soft and translucent, your pizza is ready to serve.

Tips and Warnings

  • For an extra kick of flavor, you can add a cup of crumbled feta cheese to the top of your pizza.
  • Always wash your hands with soap and water before and after handling raw food products. Wash all utensils in hot soapy water as well as all surfaces that may have come in contact with any raw food products.

Things You'll Need

  • Homemade or frozen pizza
  • Pizza peel
  • 1/2 cup corn meal
