Cabbage soup diets are restrictive fad diets designed to result in quick weight loss. With daily intake of homemade soup and by following a very stringent food list, you can lose up to 10 pounds in one week on a cabbage soup diet. Because they are not based upon making healthy lifestyle changes, a cabbage soup diet will not help you lose weight and keep it off on a long-term basis.

Plan

Every single day you consume as much cabbage soup as you desire. This homemade soup contains more than just cabbage. Onions, peppers, tomatoes and celery are combined with bouillon and even onion soup mix, resulting in the crucial recipe. Strict adherence to the allowable foods is required for all seven days. In addition to daily consumption of the cabbage soup, on day one eat as much fruit as you are hungry for. On day two, eat only vegetables, and at dinner have a baked potato with butter. Eat both fruits and vegetables on day three and skim milk with up to six bananas for day four. On day five, eat tomatoes and meat, and day six, eat beef and vegetables. Finally on day seven, consume brown rice, fruit juice and vegetables.

Benefits

The greatest benefit of this diet is the quick weight loss. The diet also includes many healthy foods with a heavy emphasis on fruits and vegetables. While this diet is not based upon solid, balanced nutrition it does not include any inherently unhealthy items on the food list. Therefore, you may experience some level of detoxification from the chemicals and preservatives that are found in processed foods. Finally, the soup the diet is based upon is quite healthy and sound nutritionally.

Drawbacks

The main drawback to this diet is that it is a fad diet without sound nutritional basis. It is a not a plan to adopt for the rest of your life that will result in improved health. Another disadvantage is the diet tends to be high in sodium. This can be easily tweaked by controlling how much sodium you add to the soup and by avoiding shaking salt onto your foods. Finally, because of how restrictive this diet is, it is difficult to adhere to and requires a great deal of motivation.

Verdict

After considering the pros and cons of this diet, you will need to arrive at a conclusion regarding whether you should try it. However, if you choose to try the cabbage soup diet, you must remember this is a diet, not a healthy way to eat for the rest of your life. According to the MayoClinic.com, you should not stay on a cabbage soup diet for more than one week, and you should follow a cabbage soup diet with a well-balanced diet that is nutritionally sound for several weeks.
