Pitching machines are mechanical devices that simulate a live pitcher in baseball and softball. Pitching machines can throw balls at hitters or fielders so that players can practice batting and catching fly balls. However, players cannot use a pitching machine to gauge how fast they throw the ball.
Pitching Machines and Velocity
You can set pitching machines to throw at different velocities, with some reaching speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. Some players tout the ability to throw a ball and compare it with the speed the machine throws. However, comparing speeds is not an accurate reading of your throw's velocity.
Pitching Machine Uses
Pitching machines enable players to get more swings without tiring out the arm of a coach or teammate. This is useful because at some point teammates or coaches will tire and not be able to continue pitching. However, by using a pitching machine, you can get an unlimited number of pitches and swings during batting practice. Some machines also shoot fly balls, pop-ups and ground balls to help fielders practice.
Measuring Throwing Speed
Baseball throwing velocity is measured with specially designed, hand-held radar guns. Radar guns measure the speed of the ball when it is released from the thrower's hand. The guns are operated by standing behind the intended target and must be pointed at the release point of the ball. Baseball radar guns measure the speed of any moving ball, including those that pitching machines row.
Types of Machines
Pitching machines come in dozens of sizes, shapes and models that have different features. Some of these machines throw smaller balls or use a type of ball that is not a standard baseball. Different models or types of machines also throw balls harder or farther than others. Some machines can throw breaking pitches or curve balls instead of standard straight fastballs.
