The colon is a U-shaped portion of the large intestine, and according to the Gastroenterological Society of Australia, the colon has four sections responsible for absorbing water and minerals from food. Inside this portion of the large intestine, bacteria within the colon break down usable portions of food and assist in the formation of feces. Colon cleansing proponents suggest the flushing of this organ helps rid toxin buildup, and encourages healthy colon function. One of the positive side effects associated with colon cleansing is weight loss; however, the act of cleansing the colon is not proved by scientific research to promote weight loss.
Spot Reduction Theory
The theory of spot reduction is based on the notion of being able to shed body fat from a localized area through specific diet and exercise routines. While it is possible to strength-train isolated muscle groups, losing body fat in a specific area is not based in scientific evidence. The American Council on Exercise states this body loses weight as a whole, and not in individual areas. Thus, undergoing a colon cleanse to lose belly fat is not based in scientific fact.
Colon Cleansing
Colon cleansing is often prescribed prior to certain medical procedures, such as a colonoscopy, yet the medical community does not condone the use of colon cleansing for vanity purposes or detoxification. Micahel F. Picco, M.D., from the Mayo Clinic reports colon cleansing is unnecessary, as the colon is designed to effectively eliminate bacteria and waste from the body. One of the few benefits of colon cleansing is to help relieve constipation. However, it is suggested to attempt more traditional methods, such as drinking ample fluid and consuming a high-fiber diet, to relieve constipation before undergoing a colon cleansing procedure.
Colon Cleansing and Weight Loss
Proponents of colon cleansing claim that after undergoing a colonic or taking colon cleansing medications, you will lose excess body fat. This supposed benefit from colon cleansing is nothing more than hype, as no scientific information proves colon cleansing assists in body fat reduction. Any weight loss from colon cleansing may be due in part by eliminating fecal matter from the intestines, which causes the body to lose weight, but is not due to fat loss.
Warnings
Colon cleansing should be discussed with your physician, as this procedure may cause serious adverse side effects. Michael F. Picco, M.D. states colon cleansing may lead to an increased risk of dehydration, colon perforations and an increase of electrolytes in your body. Colonic irrigation, which is the process of inserting a tube into the anus and flushing the colon with a saline solution, may cause severe cramping and pain, as well as an increase of infection if the equipment is not properly sterilized.
