Fever in children occurs in response to an infection, as part of the body's immune reaction to fight off the illness. Unless the fever is very high and prolonged, it is usually not dangerous and can almost always be managed with home treatment. When combined with administration of fluids and the use of fever reducing medications, when necessary, properly dressing a child with a fever can help lower body temperature, ensure comfort and speed recovery.
Step 1
Let your child sleep in underwear and a T-shirt if she wishes, and use light blankets to keep her warm while she is ill. This makes it easier to control her environmental temperature, helps ensure she remains comfortable and makes it easier to give sponge baths, when necessary.
Step 2
Protect your child's skin from heat rash, chafing and other irritation by dressing him in cotton and other natural fabrics and avoiding scratchy fabrics and rough seams. Your child will sweat a lot while recovering from a fever, and cotton allows air to reach the skin, keeping your child dry and comfortable.
Step 3
Dress your child in multiple layers if she is in a cold environment. Layers protect your baby against the cold without overheating her. Overdressing your child traps her body heat between her skin and clothing, which can cause her fever to rise.
Step 4
Choose clothing items that are easy to remove if your child becomes wet with sweat. This is especially important if your child is having difficultly sleeping. Look for items that are easy to pull off and have no zippers, snaps or ties.
