Peppermint has been used for thousands of years as a remedy for digestive and respiratory disorders. Today, it is used to relieve a number of ailments, including cluster headaches. Consult a medical professional before using any herbal remedy or supplement.
Cluster Headaches
Cluster headaches are severe, intensely painful headaches that occur for periods of time then stop completely. These time periods are known as clusters, giving the headaches their name. Cluster headaches usually occur suddenly on one area of the head and may be accompanied by swelling, tears, redness or swelling of the eye and face on the affected side.
Peppermint
Peppermint, called mentha piperita, is a flowering plant of Europe and North America that grows two to three feet high. Oil from the peppermint leaves and stems contains a substance, menthol, that gives peppermint its healing quality. Peppermint oil is used medicinally for its pain-relieving and calming effects. It is also used to flavor gum, candy, toothpaste and tea.
Uses
Peppermint has been used effectively to relieve irritable bowel syndrome, indigestion (unless it is caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease), flatulence, irritated skin and cold and flu symptoms. Topical application or inhalation of peppermint oil can be effective for relief of tension headaches. While peppermint has many uses, there is no known study for the use of peppermint to decrease cluster headaches specifically. Receive medical advice before using any herbal remedy.
Other Remedies
Aside from medication, lifestyle and some other alternative treatments may be helpful for decreasing severity or frequency of cluster headaches. Have a regular sleep pattern. Avoid alcoholic beverages. Kudzu, capsaicin and melatonin may reduce frequency and severity of cluster headaches. Work with a physician before using any herb or supplement.
