Waterproof Tape for Swimming

Taping injured ankles and digits is common in many sports, as is using adhesive to cover wounds. In swimming, waterproof tape can keep the adhesive from losing its stickiness and coming off, leaving the wound or injury susceptible to further damage or infection. There are a few brands of waterproof tape and a variety of sizes, depending on the application for the tape.

Kinesiology Tape

Kinesiology tape is probably one of the best waterproof tapes in athletics. It is used to treat and prevent a variety of injuries, including sprains and strains. The elastic, therapeutic tape also provides faster healing by helping the blood to circulate. The tape is 2 inches wide and comes in various colors. Beware of fake products that do not offer all the benefits of the real thing.

Johnson & Johnson Red Cross Tape

Johnson & Johnson makes a good heavy-duty waterproof tape to help keep wounds dry while also offering support. It sticks well to both skin and dressings and stays secure even when wet. It is good for quick applications because it tears easily. It is white in color and comes in widths of 1/2 inch and 1 inch.

Nexcare Absolute Waterproof Tape

Nexcare brand of waterproof tape sticks even when wet. It is a latex-free, flexible tape with added cushioning and contours easily around joints creating a tight waterproof seal. Individuals can wear it for days while showering and swimming and it will stay put. This breathable, hypoallergenic tape is 1 inch wide and comes in a tan color.

Nexcare Tegaderm

For cuts, scrapes, minor burns and other wounds, many swimmers and triathletes use Tegaderm dressing adhesive. Tegaderm is waterproof to protect and help in the healing process as an effective barrier to microorganisms. Tegaderm can be left on for up to seven days. It comes in a variety of shapes and sizes depending on the size of the wound to be covered.
