Cozaar, the brand name for the generic combination medication losartan and hydrochlorothiazide are both given for high blood pressure. The medications can be given separately or in combination in a medication known by the brand name Hyzaar. Cozaar may increase potassium levels in the body, while hydrochlorothiazide is known to reduce potassium. When taking blood pressure medications such as Cozaar and hydrochlorothiazide, your doctor may need to monitor blood potassium levels with laboratory testing. Tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions and medicines that you may be taking.

Potassium in the Body

Potassium is the most common mineral within most of the body's cells. It is needed for muscle and nerve signal transmission and the proper functioning of most body systems, particularly the heart and nervous system. It also works with sodium to control water balance in the body. Potassium levels that are too high, known as hyperkalemia may cause irregular heartbeat, which may become serious and lead to cardiac arrest. Hypokalemia, or low potassium levels may also cause heart irregularities, lethargy, weakness, and may lead to more serious conditions such as respiratory distress. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience any symptoms of low or high potassium levels.

Hydrochlorothiazide

Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic medication given to reduce the amount of water in the body to reduce blood pressure. It works in the kidneys to remove sodium and water, but may remove potassium as well. This may result in lowered potassium levels in the body when it is taken alone. It should not be taken by those who have sensitivity to sulfonamide type drugs as it may cause allergic reactions including itching and rash or more severe symptoms such as throat swelling or difficulty breathing which is a medical emergency. It may also interact with a number of medications including some given for heart conditions such as digoxin and other diuretics. It may also cause side effects such as dizziness, blurred vision and abdominal discomfort. Talk to your doctor about all medicine that you are taking and side effects that you may have.

Cozaar

Cozaar or losartan is another anti-hypertensive medication in the angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) class of drugs. It works by blocking the activity of angiotensin II, a strong vasoconstrictor at the receptors on the blood vessels allowing for relaxation of the vessels and lowered blood pressure. It may cause drug interactions with fluconazole, phenobarbital and rifampin, which may require a dosage adjustment of Cozaar. It also may increase aldosterone levels within the body which may lead to higher potassium levels when taken alone.

Cozaar, Hydrochlorothiazide and Potassium

The combination of Cozaar and hydrochlorothiazide in the medication Hyzaar has not been shown to cause significant changes in potassium levels in the body. Under normal conditions, potassium levels will remain in a normal range unless other medications are added to the regimen. When talking to your doctor about your condition, ensure that he knows about all of the medications you are taking to avoid interactions. He may also wish to monitor electrolyte levels, including potassium through laboratory blood testing to ensure that you do not have any negative effects from taking your medication.
