Rich in fiber, vitamin C and potassium, bananas can be consumed on their own or as an addition to desserts or baked goods. As a key ingredient in banana bread, ripe bananas provide a source of moisture and a subtle sweet flavor. For some, nothing beats a slice of banana bread fresh out of the oven, and there's more than one way to enjoy it.

Step 1

Cut the banana bread into 1/2-inch to 1-inch thick pieces, depending on personal tastes, and use it for French toast. Emeril Lagasse recommends an egg mixture of 4 large eggs, 2 tbsp. of milk, ½ tsp. of vanilla extract, ¼ tsp. of cinnamon and 1/8 tsp. of nutmeg. Whisk the ingredients together in a large bowl and soak the banana bread in the mixture for one to two minutes on each side. Cook the soaked bread in a lightly buttered skillet over low heat until browned on both sides. Serve with your choice of dessert sauce or syrup.

Step 2

Cut the banana bread into 1/2-inch thick pieces. Cut as uniformly as possible to ensure even toasting. Put the slices in a toaster and toast until lightly browned on each side. Spread a thin layer of butter or honey on the toasted banana bread.

Step 3

Cook the banana bread in the microwave for 15 to 20 seconds at high power to warm it up. Set the banana bread in a bowl and top it with your choice of ice cream. The warmth causes the ice cream to slowly melt and soak into the bread, making it a rich, creamy dessert.
