Getting into a boxing ring and competing with an opponent requires you to be in top physical condition. Boxers must depend on their quickness, instincts and reaction to throw punches and to avoid getting hit when their opponent retaliates. Nobody can avoid getting hit at all times, but you have a much better chance of surviving a barrage of punches when you are in top shape and you use evasive tactics against an aggressive opponent.
Step 1
Circle to your left as you look for openings against your opponent. If you are right-handed, you will be able to find your opponent's weaknesses and make it difficult for him to connect with you when he throws a punch. Since you are moving he will find it difficult to hit you. When you see an opening, step in and throw a punch and then retreat back quickly to avoid getting hit.
Step 2
Move your head and shoulders as you box in the ring. Head and upper body movement make it more difficult for your opponent to connect squarely with the prime striking areas. if you are stationary, it is easy to get hit with a hard shot to the head and upper body areas. However, if you move your head it will take your opponent longer to calculate your position and hit you with a square shot.
Step 3
Hit your opponent with a flurry of punches when you close ground and attack. Many fighters will not throw punches in combinations. That means your opponent will have time to throw a punch while you step in or step back. If you throw punches in combinations and those punches are landing, he will be too busy trying to block your shots and he won't be able to throw effective punches.
Step 4
Keep your arms up high while you are boxing. You are required to attack your opponent and defend yourself at the same time. You can do this by raising your left arm to chin level and your right arm nearly as high. You can throw punches and then quickly return to a defensive position that will allow you to block shots and avoid them as well.
