When you are over 50, your skin begins to show the signs of aging. Wrinkles and fine lines may appear along with facial dryness. A holistic approach to skincare involves avoiding the use of harsh chemicals to treat common problems associated with senior women. To ensure you are using natural products, always check labels. Keep in mind that most products must contain some preservatives to extend shelf-life, and prevent the growth of bacteria.

Step 1

Stop smoking. Smoking is responsible for premature aging. The repetitive facial expressions associated with smoking promote wrinkles. Smoking also destroys elastin, a chemical responsible for keeping your skin soft and supple.

Step 2

Eat a lycopene rich diet. Senior skin may be sensitive to the sun and easily burned. According to a 2002 study published in the "Skin Pharmacology and Skin Physiology," researchers found that lycopene reduced skin reactions in individuals exposed to UV light. Lycopene is found in tomatoes, melon, grapefruit, asparagus and cabbage.

Step 3

Cleanse your face twice a day. Daily cleansing removes dirt and bacteria and controls the amount of oil on your skin.

Step 4

Use a daily moisturizer with built-in sun protection. Moisturizers with a SPF of at least 15 decrease the amount of damage caused by the sun.

Step 5

Read the ingredients on cleansers and moisturizers for your face. Holistic products contain easy to recognize names such as jojoba oil, evening primrose, pomegranate and sunflower oil. Products without any harsh chemicals may contain the words "natural" or "organic" on the label.

Step 6

Check for the National Products Association's Natural Seal. The Natural Seal certifies that 95 percent of the ingredients in the product are natural and it does not pose a risk to human health.
