Running drills in gym class are not always the favorite game for every student. But running drills are an essential component for teaching children the basic concepts of fitness, health and wellness along with physical traits such as balance, coordination, endurance and stamina. Automated running drills use a timer, circuits or partner to automatically indicate your turn to run, making the drills fun, exciting and challenging for every student.

Make It Fun

An important factor to a successful gym class is making the activities and games fun for every student. And that is especially true for automated running drills as running is often considered boring to many students. Adjust the automated running drills to match the individual level and interests of each class. Vary the drills for new and exciting challenges that will engage the students' interest.

Equipment

For automated running drills in gym class, you will need only a few basic pieces of equipment. You will need some type of timing device, such as a timer or stopwatch. Preferably, the timing device will have an alarm to indicate when it's time to run, stop or rest. You can use the basketball scoreboard if the gym class is in the gymnasium. Additional equipment can be added to the drills for new challenges, such as sports balls, medicine balls, jump ropes and marking cones.

Circuits

Circuit training is a traditional approach to fitness, but you can also use circuits for automated running drills. For example, you can split the students into pairs and set up 10 different stations. Each station has a different activity such as bouncing a ball, jump rope, partner ball pass or jumping jacks. The stations are timed and then the students will run a specific distance as they change stations. The circuits are nearly endless in possibilities.

Partner Run

Partner relay runs is an easy and fun way for an automated running drill in gym class. Mark off a specific distance, course or route using marking cones and vary the route to add fun and excitement. Start by having one partner run the distance while the other partner waits. When the partner finishes running, the other partner runs through the course. You can also incorporate different running activities or exercises such as skipping, hopping or jumping.
