A change in body weight is a common side effect of many drugs, including the antidepressant bupropion. Wellbutrin is one brand name of various forms of bupropion medications. This drug tends to cause weight loss in many people. While this potential side effect may appeal to some overweight individuals, consumption of a nutritious diet is more important to your overall health and wellness. Notify your doctor if you experience weight loss or any other side effects when taking Wellbutrin XL.

Wellbutrin XL 300

Wellbutrin is a drug in the aminoketone class of antidepressants. Wellbutrin is available in various forms and dosages. The XL 300 form of this drug contains an extended-release formula that gradually delivers 300 mg of bupropion into your system. The extended release form is also available as a 150-mg dose.

Side Effects

Like many other antidepressant medications, Wellbutrin can cause a variety of side effects. Common ones include loss of libido, mild itching, rash, dizziness, insomnia and headache. Changes in appetite are common and may lead to an increase or decrease in body weight. Some individuals taking Wellbutrin experience nausea and vomiting -- uncomfortable symptoms that may increase the risk of weight loss. According to Stanford School of Medicine, up to 28 percent of people taking Wellbutrin experience a significant weight loss that amounts to more than 5 lb.

Counteracting Weight Loss

Appetite plays an important role in influencing your diet and calorie intake. Skipping meals or eliminating healthy sources of nutrition can increase your risks of excessive weight loss and possible nutritional deficiencies. Eating a balanced diet can help you counteract the weight loss that commonly occurs from using Wellbutrin. McKinley Health Center recommends gaining weight by adding nutritious calories in the form of milk, juice, sports drinks, cheese, sour cream and ground flaxseed. Choosing heavy breads and dense cereals also can increase your calorie intake.

Precautions

Wellbutrin XL 300, like some other antidepressant medications, can increase your risk of suicidal thoughts and may cause an increase in depression. Excessive and quick weight loss can be unhealthy, especially if you are already underweight. Let your doctor know if you continue to lose weight, even after adding nutritious, high-calorie foods to your diet. Stanford School of Medicine warns against taking Wellbutrin if you have a history of bulimia or anorexia.
