The MOLLE backpack, or Modular Lightweight Load Carrying Equipment, is a modular backpack system used by armed forces personnel to carry personal items and equipment. The MOLLE system consists of several components. The main rucksack is a large backpack with side pockets, called sustainment pockets. The frame contours to your body and holds the vest, which is made of interwoven webbing to hold pocket attachments. The MOLLE backpack comes in several basic configurations, but you can add or subtract modules to tailor the backpack to your needs.

Step 1

Adjust the width of the vest by lengthening or shortening the two, 1-inch webbing straps on the front of the vest. Pull the end of the straps to tighten the vest. Push the end of each strap back through the D-ring and pull it through to loosen the vest.

Step 2

Move the female connection socket to adjust the belt up or down. The MOLLE belt wraps around your hips to take some of the load off your back and shoulders. To adjust the belt higher or lower, locate the plastic insert on the back of the system. Remove the four screws that hold the socket in place. Slide the socket up or down to the desired location, and replace the screws.

Step 3

Choose the spot where you want to attach an extra pocket. Line up the top of the pocket with the top of the nearest strap of horizontal webbing. Grab the pocket attachment strap and thread it alternately through the webbing and the channels on the back of the pocket. Continue weaving the strap down its entire length and snap the strap to the bottom of the pocket.

Step 4

Set your load configuration. Add or remove modules to streamline your backpack so you have enough available compartments, but no extra space.

Step 5

Slide the vest on and secure the straps in front. Sling the rucksack on your back. Insert the pack frame into the waist belt socket on the back of the belt. Rock backward to make sure the rucksack is secure.

Step 6

Remove the MOLLE backpack by pulling upward on the quick-release buckle tabs, which are on the front of the shoulder straps.

Tips and Warnings

  • The waist belt is available in three sizes: the small belt fits waists 28 to 35 inches; the medium belt fits waists 35 to 40 inches; the large belt fits waists 40 inches and larger.
  • Always interweave the pocket strap through the vest webbing and the pocket channels. If you simply slide the strap through the webbing, the pocket will not be secure.

Things You'll Need
