Banana peppers may cause gas and bloating, but it all depends on the way your body digests banana peppers and how sensitive you are to gas. The average healthy adult will not experience increased gas and bloating from eating banana peppers, but if you are prone to gas and bloating, most vegetables can trigger your symptoms. If you notice that other types of peppers cause gas and bloating, avoid banana peppers. Talk with your doctor if your gas symptoms increase or do not subside within three days.
Gas and Bloating
On average most people pass gas about 14 times a day, according to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse. When you develop increased gas that becomes trapped in your digestive system, you may develop sharp pains and your abdomen becomes distended. Gas develops when undigested carbohydrates enter you colon and interact with bacteria, creating an odorless vapor. When the vapor passes through your anus, it becomes smelly because of certain gases that release sulfur.
Foods
Certain foods cause gas more than others. Banana peppers are not considered a high gas- forming food, but could still cause it to develop if you're sensitive to the vegetable or if you have another digestive condition. The University of Michigan Health Services states that high gas-forming foods include onions, cabbage, radishes, carrots, celery, beans, peas, green salads, high fiber breads and cereals, brown rice and dried fruit. If you develop stomach pain after consuming any of these foods, avoid them to prevent recurring gas and bloating.
Elimination Diet
Your doctor may recommend an elimination diet to determine whether or not banana peppers are triggering your symptoms. Elimination diets are not intended to diagnose a specific condition but rather identify problem foods, according to the University of Wisconsin. Your doctor will recommend that you remove all peppers from your diet for two weeks. Once the two week elimination period is over, you'll eat banana peppers and record any symptoms that develop in your body.
Conditions
Certain conditions may cause more gas and bloating regardless of whether you eat banana peppers. Common digestive conditions that trigger gas and bloating include Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome and certain food intolerances. Your doctor can provide you with a clinical diagnosis and treatment options.
