According to the doctors at the University of Cincinnati, maintaining a healthy diet that helps support healthy weight during chemotherapy treatment is a worthy and important goal. A balanced diet that includes a variety of nutritious foods is ideal, particularly if your appetite remains in place. If not, healthy, mild snacks are recommended.
Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables provide an array of powerful antioxidants, which help fight cancer and prevent further diseases from developing. A study conducted at University of California Riverside found that apigenin, a naturally occurring compound found in fruits and vegetables, improves a person's reaction to chemotherapy. Choose a variety of fruits and vegetables daily as part of healthy meals and snacks. If your appetite is reduced, pure fruit and vegetable juices are a valuable option.
Whole Grains
At least six servings of whole grain carbohydrates are recommended while undergoing chemotherapy treatment. This can easily be attained by seeking two servings at each meal. An appropriate single serving is equal to one slice of whole grain bread, one cup of whole grain cereal, cooked pasta or oatmeal or 1/2 cup of brown rice. Enjoy these as a part of a balanced meal or in smaller amounts as nutritious snacks. Even sweet dessert foods can contain whole grains, so if your palate is hungry for sweet "comfort foods," opt for whole grain cookies or granola bars in an appropriate serving size.
Lean Protein
Modest amounts of lean protein daily will help your body maintain muscle mass throughout your treatment. Ideal sources are legumes, lean poultry, fish, eggs and low-fat dairy products. Aim for three ounces of fish or poultry, 1/2 cup of legumes or one cup of milk or yogurt at each meal.
Fluids
Non-caffeinated beverages such as water, pure fruit or vegetable juices, low-fat milk and herbal teas are ideal during the course of chemotherapy. Proper hydration aids in circulation and is crucial if you are experiencing vomiting and/or not in-taking hydrating foods, such as fruits, vegetables and soups. Do your best to consume 64 ounces of preferred liquids daily.
