Your identification and phone serve as a key safety tool when you take to the roads or trails for a run. Your phone gives you a communication tool in case you run into trouble. Some parks and trails may have emergency phones, but having your own phone with you at all times is safer. Your ID helps rescuers determine who you are in the case of a medical emergency, severe injury or attack. Carrying items along with you can feel awkward, but several options allow you to keep your ID and phone near.
Step 1
Write emergency and health information on a small card the same size as your identification card. Include emergency contacts, existing medical conditions, medications you currently take, allergies, blood type, preferred hospital and physician. Carry this along with your driver's license or similar identification to aid rescuers if something happens to you.
Step 2
Write your name, emergency contacts and basic medical information inside your shoe with a permanent marker in case your identification becomes lost. Another option is to write the information inside a hat or other article of clothing you wear on every run. Trace over the information with permanent marker if it begins to fade over time.
Step 3
Slide your phone into an armband made for carrying MP3 players and similar electronics. If the armband has a zippered or Velcro closure that is secure, slide your identification and medical information card behind the phone.
Step 4
Store your phone and identification inside of a zippered pocket on your running shorts if one is available.
Step 5
Place both your phone and identification in a small waist pack that fits securely around your body. Test the pack on a short run to determine if the bouncing bothers you.
Step 6
Wear an ID necklace, bracelet or anklet to eliminate the need to carry your actual ID. The ID jewelry allows you to leave your official identification at home so it won't get lost. A piece of jewelry may also feel less noticeable than would a bulkier armband or waist pack when you're running.
