After perfecting the basic flat-ground maneuvers, many snowboarders venture into a specialized obstacle course known as the terrain park. The terrain park houses a variety of obstacles, including boxes and handrails. When attempting the 50-50 grind for the first time, choose a lowered handrail that features a square shape. As opposed to a circular snowboarding rail, the square rail allows you to balance on a level platform. ABC-of-Snowboarding recommends keeping your shoulders parallel to the handrail while performing the 50-50 grind.

Step 1

Bend your knees to a 45-degree angle while riding toward the snowboarding rail. Approach the handrail with the toe edge of your snowboard parallel to the obstacle. Shift your body weight onto the rear snowboard binding as you near the front end of the rail.

Step 2

Extend your legs to jump off your back foot. Lift your knees to elevate the snowboard above the handrail. Align the underside of the snowboard over the top of the rail in a parallel position.

Step 3

Bend your knees as the bottom of the snowboard descends onto the rail. Extend your arms for balance while executing the 50-50 grind. Transfer your body weight onto the rear binding as you slide toward the end of the handrail.

Step 4

Extend your legs to jump away from the handrail. Bend your knees as you land on the snow to absorb the impact. Rotate the snowboard to a horizontal position to slow your momentum.
