While certain riders prefer to keep their boards on the snow, others opt for high-altitude jumps off steep ramps. Getting acquainted with the jumping technique on flat ground will allow you to feel comfortable when attempting a bigger jump off a kicker. In snowboarding, the jumping technique is commonly referred to as the Ollie. According to ABC-of-Snowboarding, the Ollie technique involves using the tail of the snowboard as a springboard for your jump. Wearing a polycarbonate snowboarding helmet will help to prevent serious injuries in the event of a fall.

Step 1

Place your snowboard onto the ground about 75 feet from the ramp to ensure you have enough time to gain adequate speed. Tighten the binding straps to secure your boots in place. Point the nose of the snowboard toward the bottom of the ramp.

Step 2

Bend your knees to maintain a crouched position as you glide toward the ramp. Extend your arms out to your sides to ensure a balanced takeoff. Shift your bodyweight onto your back foot as you ascend the snowboarding ramp.

Step 3

Lift your front foot as the nose of the snowboard reaches the apex of the ramp. Lean back onto the tail of the snowboard to initiate the jumping technique. Straighten your back leg while leaping skyward off the top of the ramp.

Step 4

Pull your knees toward your chest to maximize the altitude of your vertical leap. Lean forward slightly to ensure the bottom of the snowboard remains parallel to the riding terrain. Grab the toe-edge of the snowboard with your dominant hand to maintain an aerodynamic jumping stance.

Step 5

Release your grip from the edge of the snowboard as you begin to lose altitude. Look toward the ground to spot a safe landing. Bend your knees to absorb the landing impact as the snowboard touches down.
