Boxing is a test of a fighter's strength, punching power, quickness, defensive ability and strategy. The sport requires the discipline to stay calm after an opponent has hit you with a series of hard punches. The ability to keep your focus after getting hit hard, and to follow the primary rules of the sport, give you a strong chance to make an excellent showing in the ring.
No Hitting Below The Belt
Boxers must make sure they throw punches at or above the belt line of the trunks. A boxer cannot throw a punch below the belt, or the referee can take away a scoring point. If a punch that is deemed below the belt is accidental, the referee will not deduct a point, and the fighter who was hit is allowed up to five minutes to recover from the punch.
No Hitting In the Back of the Head
A boxer cannot grab his opponent and then swing his fist and hit the back of his head. This is called a rabbit punch and is illegal. The danger of this punch is that it is sneaky, and the opponent can't see it and defend himself. However, no boxer should turn his back to his opponent. In that case, you cannot claim your opponent hit you in the back of the head. If that happens, it is because your presented your back and the back of your head as a target.
No Punching After a Knockdown
If you have landed a clean punch that knocks your opponent down, you must go to the farthest neutral corner so the referee can begin his count. You cannot move to fight again until the referee waves you back. You may not stand over your opponent and hit her when she is on the mat.
No Hitting Opponent on the Knee
A boxer may only hit an opponent who is upright. If the opponent is on one knee or getting up following a knockdown or a slip, you may not hit him until he is upright. A fighter on one knee is not in a position to defend himself, and the opponent must wait until the fighter is standing to get hit.
No Illegal Blows
Boxing does not allow kicking, elbowing, holding and hitting, biting or head butting. If any of these illegal blows occur, the offending fighter will be penalized and might be disqualified. Opponents who are hit with illegal blows will be given up to five minutes to recover.
