While certain snowboarders prefer leisurely rides down mellow slopes, others opt to hit breakneck speeds on steep runs and courses. When attempting to hit top speeds, choose a low-traffic area that remains free of hazards such as trees, boulders and other riders. Wearing the appropriate safety gear, including a helmet and goggles, will help prevent injuries in the event of a slide out. Avoid catching the edges of your board in the snow as this will slow you down.
Step 1
Choose a groomed run with a steep slope to keep up your snowboarding speed. Bend your knees to a 45-degree angle to maintain an aerodynamic riding stance. Extend your arms behind your back to cut down on wind resistance.
Step 2
Avoid wide, sweeping turns as this will decrease your speed. Transfer your body weight quickly between the toe and heel edge of the snowboard to avoid unnecessary drag. Lean on your back foot to prevent the nose of the board from digging into the snow.
Step 3
Stay away from deep deposits of powdered snow to maintain your speed. Extend your legs to jump over icy patches in the snow as these may cause slide outs and falls. Perform quick turns to avoid collisions with fellow riders.
