Rogaine is an over-the-counter (OTC) medicine used to treat certain hair-loss conditions in both men and women. According to Drugs.com the exact way that Rogaine is successful in treating hair-loss is not known. Speculation suggests that it dilates blood vessels beneath the scalp to stimulate the hair follicle function to produce hair growth. As with any medication, Rogaine has the potential for side effects.

Mild Side Effects

The use of Rogaine can lead to discomfort at the site of applications. Drugs.com reports possible side effects of this including mild itching, redness, dryness or flakey scalp. These may go away with time or Drugs.com suggests talking to your doctor. The Physicians' Desktop Reference also suggests that individuals may experience a change in hair color or texture, increased hair loss or a lack of interest in sex.

Serious Side Effects

Serious side effects require the discontinuation of Rogaine and medical attention, states Drugs.com. These side effects may include chest pain, rapid heartbeat, irregular heart rate, dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting. The Physicians' Desktop Reference suggests other serious hazards including facial hair growth, severe irritation of the scalp, sudden weight gain, swelling of the hands, swelling of the feet or facial swelling.

Allergic Reaction

Some users may experience an allergic reaction to Rogaine. Drugs.com warns that this can be serious. Symptoms to look for include trouble breathing, constriction of the throat, lip swelling, tongue swelling, facial swelling or hives.
