Sour peaches are a gummy snack with the sweet accent of peaches and the tartness of a lemon. These candy snacks can be made with natural fruit juice, artificial flavors or a combination of the two. Don't be limited to only gumdrop or peach molds; use a variety of cookie cutters or candy molds to create different shapes to decorate your cakes, cupcakes or just have as an afternoon snack. Making these at home not only saves money but helps reduce the amount of preservatives you and your family consume, making them a healthier alternative.
Step 1
Mix 8 tbsp. of agar powder with 4 cups of peach juice and a pinch of salt. Allow the salt and agar powder to dissolve in the juice. Agar is a thickener made from seaweed.
Step 2
Pour the juice mixture into a saucepan over medium heat. Stir to keep the mixture fluid; it will thicken to a glue-like state.
Step 3
Dust your candy molds with flour.
Step 4
Remove the juice mixture from the heat and spoon it into the candy molds quickly before it cools.
Step 5
Place wax paper over the molds and press firmly down to fill all cavities of the molds with the mixture.
Step 6
Wipe away any excess mixture and place the molds in the freezer to cool for 25 to 30 minutes.
Step 7
Take the molds out of the freezer and spray with ascorbic acid to add the sour taste. Roll them in sugar for extra sweetness, if desired.
Tips and Warnings
- Use food coloring if you want added color in the mix. If you have two colors, make two mixes and drop one color in half the mold and the other color in the other half before pressing.
