Volleyball is an action sport in which there are two teams of six players each. The teams are separated by a net, and each team tries to ground the ball on the other team's court to score points. A widely loved sport, volleyball is also played in the Olympics. The rules are very extensive. If you plan to follow the sport of volleyball regularly, knowing the important terms and language of the sport is essential.

Basic Terms

A volleyball match is made up of several games. The play usually continues until one team is able to win a majority of sets in a game. A single match could consist of three sets or five sets.

A volleyball game, or set, is a single game played to achieve a number of points already determined before the game. A game is won only when one team leads the other by at least two points.

A volleyball rally is measured as the time ranging between the first serve and the end of the play. A "rally" is often also known as a "volley," which denotes the play time spent in keeping the ball in play without scoring any faults.

Court Terms

A 10-foot line or attack line is a scoring line parallel to the net. This line is only 10 feet from the net, so only the players in the front row can attack the ball from this position.

A block is the first defense when a player stops a ball from moving over the net by terminating a rally. Usually the blocking player jumps in front of the players on the opposing side to hit the ball.

Scoring Terms

A point is scored when the ball is dropped in the opposing team's side of the court. Points may be scored in a lot of different ways, such as when players commit faults and when the ball lands inside the court or outside it.

When sideout scoring is kept in a match, this is known as rally scoring. These points can be scored by either the serving or the receiving team.

Sideout scoring is a scoring match in which the point is scored only by the serving team.

Fouls and Faults

A playing fault occurs when there is a violation of the volleyball game rules. Some of the most common faults are when a player touches the ball two times consecutively and when a team passes around the ball four times or more without passing it over the net. Another common fault is when a player catches the ball and throws it back instead of hitting it back across the net or to a fellow team member.
