Herbalists and natural doctors have used sesamin as an herbal remedy for thousands of years. Today, several diet pill manufacturers use sesamin as an ingredient to promote fat burning and decrease stored fats in your body. The Food and Drug Administration, however, has not evaluated the safety or effectiveness of sesamin. You should, therefore, only use diet supplements with sesamin under the supervision of a medical professional.
Sesamin
Sesamin is a component of sesame oil extracted from mature, open sesame plants. Sesamin is also a lipid or fat and contains a fiber known as a lignin. Friendly bacteria in your body absorb the lignin fiber in your intestines and circulate the fiber throughout your bloodstream. Additionally, according to the "PDR for Nutritional Supplements," the lignin fiber has strong antioxidant properties and helps to reduce low density lipoprotein, the bad LDL type of cholesterol, from your body.
Using the Pills
Several manufacturers promote diet pills containing sesamin. Neither the FDA nor clinical research has established a recommended daily dose for diet pills containing sesamin. Many manufacturers, however, recommend taking two pills, twice a day. Manufacturers also recommend taking one of these doses of pills immediately prior to a workout. There are not any known side effects associated with the use of these diet pills. Before starting a diet or taking any supplements containing sesamin, you should consult your doctor.
How Sesamin Works
According to "Functional Foods of the East," sesamin activates the peroxisome proliferator-activator receptor alpha. You will find this receptor in your muscle tissues, liver, kidneys and heart, and this receptor facilitates the oxidation of fats and lipogenisis in your body. Further, this book states when you have increased activity of the PPARalpha, it promotes increased oxidation of fat and decreases your body's need to store calories as fats. Sesamin also increases the activity of some liver enzymes that break down fatty acids and helps produce ketones that supply your brain with energy.
Nutrition
The manufacturers of sesamin diet pills do not specifically recommend a nutritional or exercise plan as an essential component of this diet. However, even though sesamin may help you rid your body of excess fat, you should always include diet modifications and exercise as part of any diet program. Clinical research has not established the long-term safety or effectiveness of using sesamin, and you should speak with your doctors before consuming any supplement with sesamin.
