Detox body wraps are no longer just a luxury spa treatment. Performed in the privacy of your own home, a detox body wrap can be just as effective and easier on the wallet. Gathering the best combination of ingredients for an at-home detox body wrap will help to make it the most effective.

Salt and Clay

The two main components of an at-home body wrap are 1 cup of salt and 2 cups of clay. While Epsom salt works fine in a pinch, using natural sea salt may bring better results.

Salts that are mined in the geological region of the Dead Sea are known as Dead Sea salts. Available for purchase at many herb shops and health markets, Dead Sea salts are marked as such on the packaging. If at all possible, use Dead Sea salts in your detox body wrap if you have them as their mineral content and detoxification abilities are unparalleled.

Several different types of clay can be used for a detox body wrap but kaolin, French green and bentonite clays may work the best. Bentonite clay is especially beneficial for drawing toxins out of the body through the skin.

Essential Oils

While essential oils are optional, adding the right ones to your home detox body wrap will boost its detoxifying capability. A few drops of your chosen essential oil are all that needs to be added to the mixture. The aroma may also help you to relax after you are all wrapped up.

Essential oil of juniper berry works well to detoxify, reduce cellulite and calm the nerves. Lemon and grapefruit essential oils are used to detoxify the liver, lift the senses and bring clarity to the mind. Laurel oil is useful for the lymphatic system.

It is best to avoid the use of essential oils during pregnancy.

Sea Vegetables

Optional but useful, 1 cup of sea vegetables may be added to a home detox body wrap to boost its effectiveness. Adding sea vegetables to the wrap will also help deliver vital nutrients to the body through the skin, help improve circulation and may help reduce cellulite. Bladderwrack powder, Irish moss powder and kelp powder are three types that may be used.

Wetting Agents

For the body wrap mixture, add ½ gallon of water to the dry ingredients. However, you may also choose to substitute one cup of this water for an alternate wetting agent such as apple cider vinegar, milk powder, Dead Sea water or glycerin.

Natural ingredients in milk make it useful for softening skin. Apple cider vinegar is useful for its ability to aid in detoxification when taken internally. Natural glycerin helps the skin hold in moisture.

Creating the Wrap

Begin by bringing the water to a boil on the stove and then remove it from the heat. Add all of your chosen ingredients to the water. Stir and let the mixture sit for 10 to 15 minutes, allowing the mixture to cool. Prepare a comfortable, warm and private room where you can relax while you are wrapped up.

Next, dip some sheets or thin towels into the mixture, one at a time. Begin to wrap yourself up, starting at the ankles. After you have wrapped all of the desired areas on your body, lie down and relax for one hour. Rinse off in the shower or bath when time is up. Be sure to drink plenty of water before and after the wrap to help flush all of the toxins from your body.
